Tanzania

It's March 2018.
We've headed south - way south - to Tanzania for a proper Safari and then fun in the sun in Zanzibar.

Getting there....not any fun.

We took a 2 hour flight from Dublin to Amsterdam.
Stayed the night and then had an 8 hour flight to Kilimanjaro Airport.

From Kilimanjaro Airport,
we had about an hour ride to Arusha for our first night's stay.

The return trip was even more fun..
Flights from Zanzibar to Nairobi, then to Amsterdam, and on to Dublin.
All in about 12 hours air time.

About Tanzania

Tanzania sits pretty much on the equator, or just a couple degrees below it.

It was originally two countries, that became
colonies controlled by the British post WW I - Tanganyika and Zanzibar.

Following their respective independence in 1961 and 1963, the two entities merged in April 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. In 1995 it became a democracy.

Agriculture is its main industry at 24% of GDP, and employs 65% of the workforce.  Unemployment is about 10%.

GDP per capita is $3,300.  Comparatives of other countries are:
USA = $59,500
Ireland - $72,600
UK = $43,600
China = $16,600
The level of poverty in Tanzania is very high.  Approximately 68 percent of Tanzania's 50 million citizens live below the poverty line of $1.25 a day and 16 percent of children under 5 are malnourished.
Survival Phrases

Swahili is the official language. We found that everybody spoke English, and did so very well.

A few key words are:
Jambo = Hi/Hello
Lala Salama = Sleep well/good night
Asante = Thank you
Asante sana = Thank you very much
Karibu = Welcome or You're welcome
Pole Pole = Slowly
Sowa Sowa = Okey Dokey or Okay

and of course the classic from The Lion King:

      Hakuna Matata = No problems/no worries
